School millwork and casework must comply with the ADA Accessibility Standards to ensure safe, independent access for students and staff. Accessible work surfaces and sinks must maintain specific clearance heights, and general millwork must prioritize user safety through material selections and secure installation.
General Millwork Requirements
Safe Edges
All corners and edges on countertops, shelving, and cabinets should be radiused (rounded) to protect students from injuries caused by trips, falls, or accidental impacts.
Toxin Limits
(Indoor Air Quality)
Millwork materials, particularly plywood, particleboard, and adhesives, should meet strict low-emission standards (e.g., CARB Phase II or California's Prop 65) and feature low or no VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) finishes.
Hardware & Security
Cabinet doors and drawers must feature heavy-duty, commercial-grade hardware to withstand high-frequency, heavy use. Where applicable (e.g., science labs or administrative areas), locks should be integrated into drawers to secure hazardous materials or sensitive files
Vandalism & Tamper Resistance
Exposed fastenings should be minimized or tamper-proof in public and unsupervised student areas. Wall-mounted shelving and upper cabinets must be structurally reinforced and securely anchored to wall studs to prevent tipping or detachment under heavy weight.
Accessibility Requirements
ADA Clearances
Counters and workstations must provide adequate knee clearance (at least 27 inches high, 30 inches wide, and 19 inches deep) and sufficient toe clearance to accommodate wheelchair users.
Reach Ranges
Built-in shelving, adjustable upper cabinets, and storage controls must be placed within accessible reach ranges. This typically means an unobstructed forward or side reach height of 15 to 48 inches from the floor.
Hardware
Drawer pulls, cabinet knobs, and door hinges must be operable with a closed fist, avoiding tight pinching or twisting motions (e.g., U-shaped pulls are favored over small knobs).
Counter Heights
Desks, registration counters, and work surfaces serving individuals in wheelchairs should sit at an accessible height (generally around 34 inches maximum).
